Australia assumed international leadership with its $100 million Smart Grid-Smart City project, the rollout of which commenced in late 2010 and will be finalised by early 2014.
In early 2009 the Labor Government announced the funding for this project under its National Energy Efficiency Initiative and invited consortia to come up with plans. Paul Budde played a key role in the initial strategic concept for the project. He established Smart Grid Australia, the industry alliance that was instrumental in lobbying for the project.
The program is nearing completion. There are many elements to the project and he results of all of them positive or negative provide for great learnings for the whole industry. The winner of the contract, Ausgrid , has in many areas reached well beyond the original target. Significant telecoms backbone infrastructure has been rolled out to support many of the smart technologies that are deployed within the. The project also tested smart grid applications in relation to renewable energy and electric vehicles, as well as smart customer devices in the home.
The project will be finalised in 2014 and depending on the views of the new government its results will be used for the government’s plan for a national smart grid rollout.
This report provides ongoing updates as the project progresses.
