Australia - Pay TV - Statistics - Subscribers, Overview and Analysis

Synopsis

This report provides valuable information on the end users of pay TV – the viewers. Subscriber pay TV statistics include pay TV statistics per operator and growth statistics, forecast and household penetration statistics. It also includes forecast scenarios to 2015. By early 2011 pay TV penetration had reached about 32%-34% across the Australian landscape.

With the advent of digital television and the launch of a number of new digital Free-to-Air channels, Australian pay TV operators have been feeling the squeeze as viewers were quick to take advantage of the new conditions. However, in competition, Foxtel and AUSTAR have served up to 30 new channels in a bid to attract Free-to-Air viewers to their subscriber base. Average Revenue per User has continued to increase over the last couple of years with BuddeComm estimating further increases in 2011.

In 2011 Optus is set to resell the Foxtel high definition services to its own customers after several years of not promoting the service, and may even get more customers by selling the pay TV services though its satellite services.

In this report we provide a range of statistics such as subscribers, penetration rates and viewing patterns. These are presented across a range of tabular and chart formats with analysis and commentary provided where appropriate. Also provided is BuddeComm commentary and analysis on some recent industry subscription TV events.
