Australia - Mobile Broadband - Statistical Overview and Forecasts

Synopsis

Mobile broadband access using the 3G and now the 4G/LTE networks has continued to expand as users continue to add tablets, modems and phones to use alternative communication methods and cloud based services. In the past year growth in mobile broadband across Australia has started to slow after previously seeing exponential growth rates.

Yet with around 5.5 billion mobile broadband subscribers, the release of a 4G network by one mobile network operator has seen uptake of more than 300,000 services in just over half a year. As BuddeComm previously predicted the use of LTE mobility broadband would boost the uptake of mobile broadband usage and this is likely to expand further as the NBN use of wireless services commence.

The expansion rate in Australia closely mimics the global uptake of mobile broadband where four billion subscriptions are set to be exceeded by 2015. In the longer term with the increase in connected devices and the increased availability of mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, the amount of mobile data downloaded is likely to at least double yearly for the next few years.

During 2012 BuddeComm estimates that the total mobile broadband market will generate revenues up 17% from 2010, the vast majority of which will be accounted for by 3G mobile broadband revenues. Last year, growth continued across a range of platforms and technologies with the use of 3G mobile and wireless broadband services growing by 70%.
