This report assesses the usage of internet and broadband services in Australia’s residential sector. It includes market estimates as well as data from a number of surveys covering consumer usage and patterns, in addition to internet and broadband data statistics.
The report also analyses the drivers behind internet adoption among Australian households. Surveys covered include statistical overviews from the Australian Bureau of Statistics regarding computer and internet usage by a range of criteria. By 2016 internet use had become more prevalent than computer ownership, with Australians using devices such as mobiles, tablets and internet-enabled TVs to access the internet. Tablet use within households has also grown sharply, though the sector is under constant pressure from new phablets and larger screened smartphones and into 2017 the tablet market has begun to wane.
As the growth in the number of subscribers for various services has slowed, in the wake of higher penetration, the number of service complaints has fallen. This reflects the emphasis which operators have placed on customer service and customer satisfaction as they adjust to lower net adds and endeavour to reduce rates of churn. However, surveys show a considerable discrepancy between how telcos rate their interaction with customers and how positively customers themselves see their relationship with service providers.
