Synopsis

Though digital cable TV gets much of the attention in the converged media environment in China, digital satellite TV and digital terrestrial TV will play key roles in the future. Despite the government setting ambitious roll-out targets for digital TV, the take up rate has been slow and the government has had to review its targets and its approach. Cable TV is also set to play a pivotal role in China’s converged media environment, as triple play services, which include the provision of television, telephony and broadband Internet access over a single network, begin to be delivered over cable TV infrastructure. China has the largest cable TV network in the world. This report also looks at the steps China is taking to develop the iTV market which has the potential to turn Chinese TV viewers into online participants and buyers. This report includes information on some of the players in China’s satellite TV, cable TV and broadband TV markets.
