Nokia purchases Symbian

Nokia has purchased Symbian for over $410 million. Symbian’s operating system (OS) currently runs on around two-thirds of all smartphones worldwide. Nokia’s purchase of Symbian is seen as an attempt to dominate in the smart phone OS environment and combat the threat of open-source Linux operating systems from competitors such as Apple and Microsoft Corp.
